10 Simple Steps to Feel Pretty Right Now

Do you ever have those days where you just feel plain old BLAH?

You know..those days where you just want to throw your hair up, wear no makeup, baggy clothes, and stuff your face with every single toxic food you can get your hands on?

Well, STOP right now!

When you are feeling down these are some of the worst things you can do to yourself.  It is complete and utter self sabotage (I am speaking from experience here-can you tell?!?)

Sometimes you just need a little boost.  And here are some things that always make me feel a little more girly, a little prettier, and a little more confident. Here we go!

1.)  GET A MANI/PEDI.  IF YOU DON’T HAVE TIME FOR THAT, A QUICK FRESH COAT OF NAIL POLISH ON YOUR NAILS AND TOOTSIES WILL DO THE JOB!

I always, always feel way better after a mani/pedi.  I feel clean, and polished and nice and girly!

2.)  PUT ON YOUR FAVOURITE SHADE OF LIPSTICK, A TOUCH OF MASCARA AND A SWEEP OF BRONZER TO GIVE YOURSELF THAT HEALTHY GLOW.

These products have to be my go to beauty essentials.  The wonders of bronzers, mascara and a great lipstick shade can do wonders for your complexion and give you that glow from within look-no matter how dull you feel inside!

3.  CURL YOUR HAIR INTO BIG LOOSE WAVES.  OR IF YOU HAVE TIME, FRESHLY WASH ND BLOW DRY YOUR HAIR SMOOTH.

A sleek, bouncy hairstyle can add a little pep to your step.  Seriously, bedhead never made anybody feel better…

4.  EXFOLIATE YOUR ENTIRE BODY, SHAVE YOUR LEGS AND MOISTURIZE WITH A THICK LUXURIOUS BODY BUTTER.

There is something about getting rid of the dead skin cells and having smooth touchable skin.  Choose your favourite scented body butter to give your senses a boost.

5.  PUT ON A GREAT OUTFIT (YOU KNOW, THAT GO TO OUTFIT THAT ALWAYS MAKES YOU FEEL GREAT.)  ADD A PAIR OF HEELS.

Heels always fit…and you must have a favourite pair, I know I do!  A great outfit can make you feel like a new person.  It doesn’t have to be fancy, just something that makes you feel pretty and confident.

6.  SPRITZ YOURSELF WITH YOUR FAVOURITE PERFUME.

Perfume is usually associated with getting ready for a special event or night out, so a quick spritz can help reignite those feelings of positivity instantly.

7.  SWEAT IT OUT!  GET A QUICK 15 MINUTE WORKOUT IN AND REAP THE MANY BENEFITS!

What can I say, this is my FAVOURITE option.  I LOVE exercise.  Any and all forms of it.  Even if you don’t love it while you’re doing it (which btw you should be doing exercise that you love) there is no doubt you will feel amazing afterward.  Sweat it out!!!

8.  TWEEZE THOSE BROWS!  DON’T GET ALL TWEEZER HAPPY, BUT A LITTLE CLEANUP CAN GO A LONG WAY!  FILL IN THE SPARSE AREAS WITH YOUR FAVOURITE PRODUCT.

Brows that are out of control and growing in places where they are not meant to be can just make you feel gross.  Clean up your brows and it will instantly make you feel cleaner, fresher and frame your eye area.

9.  PUT ON YOUR FAVOURITE SET OF BRA AND PANTIES ON UNDERNEATH YOUR CLOTHES.  IT GIVES AN INSTANT LITTLE BOOST KNOWING THEY’RE UNDER THERE.

Seriously, this works.  I know when I feel crappy I want to reach for my old faithfuls like the worn out bra and the comfy undies.  But why can’t you have comfort AND look good?  A cute or sexy set really does give you a boost!

10.  DRINK A LARGE GLASS OF LEMON WATER (EITHER ROOM TEMPERATURE OR WARM) WITH A GIANT HEALTHY SALAD.

You will feel better putting this into your body and not have to worry about the guilt.  Your body will be satisfied and it will help beat the bloat!  You will feel more energized versus sluggish from sugar or refined carbs.  Choose the greens!

You will be surprised what a little lipstick can do for your well being.  Please don’t get me wrong, it isn’t all about the physical appearance!  Although sometimes, when you polish yourself on the outside, it can give you that extra push to take steps to heal yourself inside. Win-Win if you ask me!

These are the things that make me feel better personally that I have have been my go to’s forever.  You don’t have to do them all at once.  Even just one from the list can give you a huge boost.

I hope this brings a little sunshine to a day where you are feeling a little down!

DIY Activated Charcoal Exfoliating Facial Cleanser

I like to use this DIY facial cleanser once every other day in the mornings to wash my face.  It gently exfoliates, detoxifies and moisturizes my skin after a nights rest.

I would suggest only using this cleanser once per week if you have very dry or sensitive skin, as the baking soda may cause irritation if used too often.

I would not recommend using this cleanser to remove makeup or around the mouth or eye area.  Please also do a patch test before using all over your face 🙂

Ingredients:

1/2 c coconut oil

1 1/2 tsp activated charcoal powder (or the contents of about 5-6 capsules)

1 tbsp baking soda

6 drops Frankincense essential oil (I use Young Living)

6 drops Lavender essential oil (I use Young Living)

A few quick facts about the amazing ingredients in this cleanser:

Coconut Oil is antibacterial, anti fungal, and moisturizing.  Naturally!

Activated Charcoal Powder draws out bacteria, poisons, chemicals, dirt and other unwanted toxins to the surface of skin.

Baking Soda is great for exfoliating and removing dead skin cells.  It also brightens the complexion.

Lavender Essential Oil is calming and can help with certain skin conditions like acne, psoriasis, eczema, and wrinkles.  It is also anti fungal.

Lavender

Frankincense Essential Oil is used to reduce inflammation as well as disinfect.

Make this Exfoliating Cleanser:

Combine all ingredients in a small bowl.

Mix all ingredients well.  I used a fork and it worked just fine. (You can also use a whisk if you like)

Try to get as many lumps out as possible, but don’t worry too much because the coconut oil will melt once it is warmed by your hands and face.

Transfer the mixture to glass air tight container.  Allow to set for a few hours.  Store covered in a cool, dark place.

Don’t worry if the consistency changes, as coconut oil tends to harden and liquify depending on its surroundings.

How to Use as a Facial Wash/Scrub:

  1. With warm water, wet a face cloth and hold over entire face for about 30 seconds to open up your pores.
  2. Take a small amount of the cleanser in your hands and gently apply all over face (avoiding lip and eye area completely)
  3. Gently massage the product in a circular motion for about 30 seconds.
  4. Wet your face cloth again with warm water and hold over face for a few seconds.  Repeat this motion a few times until the product loosens up.
  5. Use the wet face cloth to remove any excess product from face.  (Remember be gentle!)
  6. Splash face with cold water to close pores.
  7. Pat face dry with a clean towel.
  8. Moisturize with either a tiny bit of coconut oil or your favourite moisturizer.

As mentioned before, use once per week if sensitive or dry skin.  I use this every other day only in the morning.

Please note I am not an expert and this is only my opinion from my personal experience using this recipe.  If you have serious skin issues, please consult your dermatologist prior to trying this and always patch test!

ENJOY!!

DAY 11 Symptoms and Hair Issues

I realized that I don’t speak much about my symptoms.  This is because I sort of tuck them away in my back pocket to read for later…meaning…I don’t want to face them or have to think about what they are.  Here is a short list of what I feel in the current moment (without much effort to tune into my body):

Headache…Neck Pain…Nausea…Rib pain…Heart palpitations…Floaters….Body aches…Joint pain…Stiffness…Weakness…Fatigue…Shooting pains in my right forearm…Trouble concentrating…

Like I said, this is just what I “feel” at the moment, not all of my symptoms.  There are many more to discuss, and if you have any questions, please feel free to ask.  I am here to share my journey.

Moving on from that…I prefer to focus on the “getting better” directive rather than dwelling on “what is”.

Let’s talk a little bit about hair….

In March of 2012 I was in optimum health, literally the best that I had been in my entire life.  I was living the healthiest lifestyle I knew.  Gluten free, dairy free, sugar free, green smoothies and juices daily, tons of lemon water, regular exercise, lots of time outdoors, Hatha yoga, and so much more.  This is the life that I LOVED and still do love.

My hair, skin and nails had never been better.  My hair especially grew like a weed, and was thick long, shiny and luscious.  Here is what my hair was like before I got sick.  Where did it go?!?  😦 😦

thumb_DSC00341_1024I miss that hair….I know it may seem vain, but it is devastating to me that this illness has made my skin bumpy and dull…my nails weak an brittle….and the worst of all, my hair has thinned out tremendously and is dry, dull, and literally doesn’t grow.

I have always really liked Nioxin haircare products, every since I worked in a salon when I was 17.  I recently did a little bit of research and found this Consultation Tool on Nioxin’s website.  You fill out a questionnaire, and a result is given with recommended products, based on your answers.  Here is what mine came up with:

FullSizeRender-56

I know that it is not recommended to use chemicals, but there have been lots of cases of reported regrowth from using this product.  I think I may give it a go…

I have also heard of Jason Thin to Thick Products for this same issue.  But I think I will start with Nioxin.  This hair situation is quite devastating to a female…it is really hard to deal with.

I have heard of Biotin 5000mcg to support hair and nail growth and I was fortunate enough to be sent a bottle today by some very kind people.  Thank you!!!!  I will be taking this once per day starting today and keep my fingers crossed.

IMG_6306-2  IMG_6308Will I ever be the same???  Sometimes I feel like this sickness took everything from me…even my healthy hair, skin, and face.

Does anyone else suffer from this?  What did you do?  Has anything helped you???

Detox Face Mask

I am trying to do everything I can to aid my body in detoxification these days and noticed that my poor little pores were aching to be freed of congestion.  I found this amazing 4 ingredient Detox Face Mask from Coconut Mama online.

The verdict is-AMAZING!  This mask really pulls all the toxins out and brings them to the surface.  (Where you want them!)  Who wants gross toxins lurking in their skin…yuck.  I halved her recipe to make this mask for myself.  Thanks Coconut Mama!

1/2 tsp virgin coconut oil

1/4 tbsp raw honey

Juice of 1/4 lemon

Mix up all ingredients in a bowl until it forms a smooth paste.  (Use a plastic or wooden spoon, as metal will decrease the efficacy of the bentonite clay)

Apply all over freshly washed face, avoiding eye and mouth areas.

Let sit for 10 minutes and remove with warm water.  Love this one!!!

#YouLookDisgusting Blogger Em Ford

First off, I am not saying she looks disgusting!! I almost feel wrong typing that as the title!

This is the first time I have seen this video from Blogger Em Ford and I really admire her for putting herself out into the world for everyone to see in her youtube video #YouLookDisgusting

IMG_5872

It breaks my heart to watch her video and the comments that people make about how ugly she looks without makeup. Some people are just plain A**holes!!! Seriously, what the hell is wrong with people?

Obviously none of these people have ever suffered a skin issue, because if they had, they would NOT make these comments.

Didn’t anyone ever teach them that if you have nothing nice to say then don’t say it at all???

I myself suffered horribly with my skin for about 2 years and for the life of me, NOTHING cleared it up!  It also came out of the blue…and I know how it makes you feel!! Horrible!  I still don’t have perfect skin!

Kudos to you Em for putting yourself out there and not caring what people think!  I think your blog is great-well done!
